Heard spoken today by the cashier to another woman whilst waiting in line at the local DG (Dollar General for all of you more sophisticated type):
“Can you tell it’s been a long day?”
Other woman: “Oh, yeah.”
Cashier: “I mean, can you tell it’s been a long day for me?”
Other woman: “Yeah, but can you tell it’s been an even longer day for me?”
Why does it always have to be like this between women (and I know it’s not just women, gah)? We’re always competing, always trying to one-up one other. Doesn’t it ever get tiresome? I know it does for me.
We’re so damn concentrated on telling the other person about how ours (day, children, life) is worse (or better, for that matter) than theirs. Always trying to have the seemingly upper hand.
I know I do this too, because apparently, it’s inherent in women to just naturally tend toward this side, but it really irks me that we can be so oblivious (and rude and inconsiderate and annoying).
I mean, for Pete’s sake. I stood outside the school after teaching a couple of violin lessons yesterday and listened to two women simultaneously carry on two separate conversations about how their kid is the worst at singing. I had no idea how to respond to either one of them. I mean, seriously?
I just had to get this outta my system. But have you noticed this, too?
Yes, I have noticed this, and it drives me BERSERK. Seriously, I HATE that nobody can ever just respond politely to what someone else has said without trying to outdo them. URGH.
Ohhh yes… as though you have to be the only one who has ever REALLY had that experience. Sigh.
PS. Sorry I’ve been MIA– covert blogging while visiting the folks is very difficult!

Ah… I am not fond of that competitiveness thing that so many women do
Not at all.
